audio series about russian couples separated by war
The artists embarked on this project to grapple with their own experiences: in 2022, their husbands left the country.
"I can't say that the seven months we've been forced to live apart have been easy for us. But it always seemed like our suffering wasn't real suffering. We're both safe (mostly), not being bombed, both healthy, and ready to support each other, even from a distance. But this forced separation of families and couples is something many simply remain silent about. And when we're silent, it feels like it doesn't exist. It was important for us to document, remember, and share this (not too dramatic) experience with others, to make it visible."
"Is a person equivalent to a home or not? Is a country equivalent to a home or not? What is home? My husband was my home. Honestly, my country was my home too. He left — I stayed, and I still can't decide what to do next. we have dates on zoom, we mark our anniversaries on Zoom, we've almost divorced several times, and often spend hours in silence on the phone. This painful and distorted life unfolds on this invisible line of calls, and it's unclear what is real. You start to forget what a live voice sounds like—it's always distorted by the phone. I understand that leaving is a privilege granted to my husband. I understand that much scarier things are happening right now. But I really don't want to forget that it's not okay when families collapse because of the unwillingness to kill and die, and the vast majority of fellow citizens call it betrayal."
"The first episode of the series gathers people's memories of the first weeks of the war, their initial thoughts about leaving, hurried weddings, and the challenges of distance."
We’ve developed an educational program featuring a series of lectures and a workshop for those who want to create an audio play about their own experiences of separation from loved ones. Our goal is to explore new ways and formats for talking about separation today.
